Cimolai 5th in the 1st stage; Cunego ok in his debut

A week after Gp Costa degli Etruschi, Lampre-ISD raced again in Italy, this time in Challenge Calabria. In Tuscany blue-fuchsia team had supported Petacchi, in Calabria the captain for the first stage (Melito Porto Salvo-Chiaravalle Centrale, 170,2 km) was Davide Cimolai (Bettini photo), since the course was suitable for fast riders. The race was covered by the bunch at quite high average speed (45 km/h) and the epilogue was a massive sprint, won by Viviani on Colli (2nd), Favilli (3rd), and Cimolai (5th).

“I’m not completely satisfied – Cimolai explained – I thank my team mates for the support they gave me and I’m happy for the feelings I had on the final straight. On the contrary, I’m quite upset for what happened when I started the sprint: I felt that someone grabbing my saddle. Viviani has nothing to do with this fact, he deserved the victory, but this trick damaged my sprint”.

“I’m quite satisfied because the team performed what we had planned in the morning meeting – sport director Lerici said – We began to prepare the sprint for Cimolai at 2000 mt to go and our riders perform a very good job in bringing Viganò until 250 mt to the arrival. There, Davide raised the speed and launched Cimolai in the sprint: he could not find linear streams, but his legs were goods and so he could obtain the 5th place”.

This is the comment by Cunego about his debut: “Everything went all right. The weather was not so bad, so I could enjoy the race atmosphere that I was missing so much”.
